Statement from Voila Afrique News on the Occasion of International Women’s Day

Voila Afrique News is proud to join diverse communities—civil society organizations, governments, intergovernmental bodies, and media institutions worldwide—in commemorating International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. for ALL Women and Girls,” and the accompanying global campaign theme “Give to Gain.”

We mark this occasion with both concern and hope. Concern, because many women and girls across the world—and particularly in Africa—continue to face barriers in accessing their fundamental rights. Hope, because platforms like Voila Afrique News are committed to contributing to change. Through collaboration with young women and journalists across Africa, we aim to investigate, report, and amplify stories from an authentic African perspective, informed by youth and gender lenses.

Under its Human Rights reporting category, Voila Afrique News highlights breaking developments, emerging opportunities, and persistent threats affecting women’s human rights. We also examine the critical role of justice systems in protecting these rights and ensuring accountability.

Justice systems are complex and deeply interconnected. Effective justice delivery requires coordination among multiple actors, including the police, courts, prosecution services, prisons, medical and forensic services, social welfare agencies, shelters, and civil society organizations. Ideally, these institutions should operate cohesively to support individuals seeking justice.

However, women’s journeys through the justice system are often hindered by gender-blind institutional cultures, procedural barriers, and gaps in coordination among justice sector actors. These shortcomings can undermine access to justice and discourage women from pursuing legal remedies.

According to General Recommendation No. 33 on Women’s Access to Justice issued by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, justice systems must be justiciable, available, accessible, and of good quality. They must also be dynamic and responsive to evolving forms of abuse and injustice, including emerging threats such as technology-based violence.

At the same time, technology, the internet, and artificial intelligence present opportunities to expand women’s access to justice. Innovative approaches—such as online hearings, digital complaint platforms, and mobile legal aid services—can help remove practical barriers faced by women, including nursing mothers, women in remote areas, and those unable to travel long distances to courts or legal aid offices.

Justiciability, in this context, refers to the existence of an operational justice system supported by gender-responsive laws and the elimination of legal provisions that discriminate against women. It also requires legal systems in which customary and religious norms reinforce—rather than undermine—women’s rights.

As Africa advances the goals of Agenda 2063, International Women’s Day presents an important moment to take bold and decisive action against harmful practices that continue to threaten gender equality. Practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation must be firmly addressed if the continent is to achieve its vision of inclusive and sustainable development.

Voila Afrique News remains committed to informing, engaging, and mobilizing communities across Africa and beyond to ensure that women and girls can fully and freely enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
